VARICOSE VEINS CAN'T BE PREVENTED, BUT YOU CAN STOP THEM GETTING WORSE.

When painful signs and symptoms occur, they may include:

Varicose veins

Varicose veins occur because of faulty valves that don’t close properly. Blood is sent in the wrong direction, forcing it to pool up and bulge in the veins of the leg with no escape. They tend to become painful and can, in some cases, lead to leg ulcers.

What treatments are available?

Although the problem is cosmetic for many people (they feel no pain), varicose veins can cause the legs to ache and feel tired easily.

Pain, heaviness, itching, cramping, and swelling of the leg are also common. When left untreated, a small percentage may develop complications.

Besides increasing pain and swelling, skin changes can occur..

The increased pressure on the veins can cause fluid to leak out into the space in between surrounding tissue and result in slow wound healing. By then, even a small scratch or a minor injury may cause bleeding or the development of a chronic ulcer.

Treatment choices include surgical and non-surgical ones.

Non-surgical treatments include simple self-care methods to reduce discomfort and the use of compression stockings.

For surgical measures, surgeons can either remove one of the veins in the leg with a procedure called vein stripping and litigation, or close it off by burning (radiofrequency heating) or sealing it shut with chemicals (sclerotherapy).

Compression Stockings

People wear compression stockings for comfort and to help prevent serious medical conditions.

Compression stockings are specially made, snug-fitting, stretchy socks that gently squeeze your leg. Graduated compression or pressure stockings are tighter around your ankle and get looser as they move up your leg.

These stockings work by applying pressure to the veins and lymphatic system of the leg. Because the stocking is made of elastic fibers and rubber, it tightly presses against the leg. This added pressure supports the veins, keeps blood circulating more easily and reduces the risk that clots or swelling will occur in the lower part of a person’s body.`

Types of Compression Stockings

There are many different compression stockings. They come in different :

Pressures Compression stockings have a range of numbers to indicate how much graduated compression the garment has. The standard compression levels for compression stockings are 15-20 mmHg, 20-30 mmHg, 30-40 mmHg and 40-50 mmHg.

Lengths Knee high compression stockings. Provide support and relief from your ankle and calf. Thigh high compression stockings. Provide support and relief to the majority of your thigh as well

Colour –

P.s : – mmHG (millimeters of Mercury)

Knee length stockings are the perfect choice for the majority of people unless swelling or varicose veins are present above the knee. In this case, thigh high stockings are a better choice for you.

Compression stocking between 15 and 20 mmHg effectively relieve the symptoms of venous insufficiency, prevent edema (swelling) and are well-tolerated by most people.

How to Wear Them

Slide your foot into the foot of the stockings and then gently roll the stockings up the leg. Be careful not to tug the stocking into place. You could ruin the elastic compression fibers if you do this.

Avoid putting lotion on your legs or wearing rings or other jewelry when you put on your stockings. If you have trouble getting the stockings on, you can use a device called a compression stocking aid (or stocking donner) to help make it easier.

These stockings should be worn daily, but taken off at night. You should wear your compression stockings during the day and take them off before going to bed. Put them on again first thing in the morning.

You should be given at least two stockings, or two pairs if you’re wearing them on both legs. This means you can wear one stocking (or pair) while the other is being washed and dried.
